SOROS Maintenance Programme Develop (MPD) Module is designed to facilitate the creation of a fleet maintenance programme using the strict processes associated with Maintenance Steering Group Logic (MSG3).
Maintenance serves some simple but important principles. To ensure the vehicle is safe first and foremost, to optimise reliability in service and ensure trains are available to the Operator when their timetable demands it.
Maintenance also presents one of the largest costs a train operator must bare, so optimising it to achieve its principles as cost effectively as possible can become a strategic imperative. MSG was designed for this purpose.WHAT IS MSG3?
Maintenance Steering Group Logic (MSG3) is a hierarchical, ordered, logic based process to derive a minimal, safe maintenance programme, which is used as the basis for maintenance programme design on almost the entire worldwide fleet of commercial aircraft. It creates a highly structured programme, clearly identifying tasks associated with safety, operational or economic drivers.
Danburykline have successfully applied MSG to rolling stock, developing the maintenance programmes from FMECA first principles or using its process to challenge the content of existing L4 & L5 VMI tasks. The primary purpose of MSG3 is the identification of system and / or component failures, which could impact safety; and requires a maintenance intervention or re-design to prevent the harmful consequences of failure.
CROSS INDUSTRY TRANSFER
We are concerned here with the MSG systems related maintenance, which is most transferable to rail. Generally, damage tolerance and fatigue management is less of a concern, however, environmental deterioration and corrosion prevention is something to be considered. MSG can be used to design and support any structured maintenance programme requirement and is particularly suited to safety critical applications, where the identification of safety derived maintenance tasks are important.
PROVEN APPLICATION IN ROLLING STOCK MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT
We have successfully applied MSG3 to rolling stock with proven enhancements in unit reliability, together with significant reductions in the preventative maintenance plan and corresponding man-hours.
Before the application of the MSG3 process, considerable redundant actions had become embedded in the fleets’ maintenance programme, which together with a lack of historic (FMEA) data to support their inclusion, made it difficult to justify their removal using any other system. MSG3’s well-proven processes provided a mechanism to safely and justifiably change the baseline programme.
